Erasmus: The First Step Back to Brussels
Labour wants you to believe that rejoining the Erasmus programme is about helping students. Don’t be fooled. This isn’t about education—it’s about politics. It’s the first brick in the road back to the European Union.

The Price Tag? Eye-Watering.
Before Brexit, the UK poured hundreds of millions into Erasmus. Rejoining could cost £160–£200 million every year. At a time when the NHS is on its knees and families are struggling to heat their homes, why should British taxpayers bankroll an EU scheme? That money could fund British schools, apprenticeships, and a UK-led exchange programme—without Brussels calling the shots.
The Trojan Horse.
Erasmus isn’t just about swapping students. It means accepting EU rules and oversight. Today it’s Erasmus, tomorrow the Single Market. Labour knows this. They’re using cultural diplomacy as a backdoor to Brussels, softening the ground for full reintegration.
Brexit Meant Control.
We voted to take back control—of laws, borders, and money. Rejoining Erasmus undermines that principle. It signals that Britain is willing to pay for access and bend to EU conditions. Is that what you voted for in 2016?
The Alternative? Independence.
Britain doesn’t need Brussels to give students opportunities. We can strike bilateral deals with global partners and create our own mobility scheme—keeping control of our funds and our future.
Bottom Line:
Labour’s Erasmus plan isn’t about helping students. It’s about reopening the door we closed. For those who value sovereignty, this is the thin end of the wedge. The question is simple: do we want to pay millions to crawl back under EU influence?
